At this point, I just wanted to make sure she will survive and thrive in the first month. Training and socialization will come, but right now, my focus was just on the essentials.
Shopping List
In 3 days, someone is going to be at the front door handing me my first puppy. I put together a shopping list, got to a local Petco and started knocking out the list (also ordered some things from Amazon)
- 25 lbs of dog food – kibbles
- A dog collar and harness
- A couple of dog leashes 10ft retractable and a 6ft flat type – had to buy new ones eventually
- A few chew toys – some of which she still loves to play with today!
- A dog crate (way too big)
- Food and water bowls (also too big)

A good friend Aryana, who’s dog recently passed away also offered me a bunch of her dog Nikki’s things like toys, canned wet food, first aid kit, treats etc.

Nikki’s stuff – Thanks Aryana!
I also started a subscription of Bark Box, which includes 2 toys, 2 bags of treat, and another 2 large pieces of treats. I will later regret committing to this annual subscription.
Learning from YouTube and Friends
Other then getting puppy “things”, I also wanted to know what to expect when I get this puppy, and how best to train her.
I watched so many videos those few days and also called/texted my friends for advice
The few things I took away were
- Puppy will need shots (the owner didn’t confirm much about her shots so I had to assume she didn’t have any)
- There will be accidents – puppies can’t hold it in and inevitably will relieve themselves indoor.
- Stick with one type of food, and don’t vary so much – consistency is good.
- Oversized crate is not good. It’s actually good to have smaller space – dogs are den animals and will feel safer in a smaller space. Good thing the create has a partition so I basically put it half way.
